Brushing your own teeth?

When is a good time to let kids brush their teeth on their own? When they have the ability to tie their own shoes.
===

Your adult teeth were already forming when you were born”

“An Italian dentist collected 2,000,744 teeth between 1868 and 1904.”

“Crocodiles don't clean their own teeth, they let a plover (little bird) pick their teeth for scraps of food - don't try this yourself!”

“Sharks grow a new set of teeth every 2 weeks, you only have 2 sets to last you a lifetime.”

“During the Middle Ages in Germany you would have been advised to kiss a donkey to cure your toothache!”

“If you are right handed you will tend to chew food on your right side. If you are left handed you will tend to chew on your left.”

“Bristles of toothbrushes were originally made from the hair of pigs and cows.”

“The hardest thing in your body is the enamel on your teeth.”

“Walruses use their large canine teeth to anchor themselves to ice while they sleep.”

“Dental decay is a contagious disease.”

“Like fingerprints, everyone’s tongue print is different.”

" The average woman smiles about 62 times per day, a man only 8! Kids laugh around 400 times a day.”

“In 1994 a prison inmate in West Virginia USA braided dental floss into a rope, scaled the wall and escaped.”

“In 1816 a tooth belonging to the scientist Sir Isaac Newton was sold for $3,633- that’s about $35,700 in today’s terms.”

“Vampire bats have fewer teeth than any other bat because they don’t have to chew their food!”

“The common snail has close to 10,000 teeth, all on its tongue.”

“Certain types of cheese including cheddar have been found to help protect teeth from decay.”

Teeth Cavities are the most common chronic disease of children.
The germs that cause cavities can be passed from parent to child so it’s important to not share foods.
Children with cavities in their primary (baby) teeth are more likely to have cavities in adult teeth.

1. Brush the outside of the bottom back teeth. Wiggle-jiggle the brush back and forth where the teeth and gums come together for a few seconds, then move the brush to the chewing surfaces and wiggle-jiggle. Then move to the inside to brush the tongue side of the teeth. Try singing while brushing. You may not be able to sing all of the song in the beginning. (Tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat.)
Brush, brush, brush your teeth. Brush them everyday. That’s the way we will fight Mr. Tooth Decay.
2. Brush the bottom front teeth outside and inside in the same manner while singing.
3. Brush the bottom back teeth on the other side.
4. Brush the top back teeth on one side.
5. Brush the top front teeth outside and inside.
6. Brush the top back teeth on the other side.
Brush morning and night even if only for a few seconds. Some brushing is better than none. Don’t give up. Once a routine is established, brushing will get easier.

If offered Alcohol

SAY: Are you talking to me? FORGET it.
Why do you KEEP pressuring me when I've said NO?
Back off!

Here are some other things you can do:

Talk to your parents about alcohol.
Don't let ads trick you into thinking alcohol is OK for you.
Never ride in a car if the driver has been drinking alcohol.
Talk to your coach, teacher, counselor, or principal about alcohol use in your school.
Find out the facts about alcohol, and the good reasons not to drink it.
Plan alcohol-free activities and events.

Getting on the Bus

When the bus approaches, do the smart thing: step back and stand at least THREE GIANT STEPS away from the curb. That way the bus driver can pull up to the curb so you won't have to walk out in the street to get on.
Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it's okay to board before stepping onto the bus.
Never walk behind the bus or close to the side of the bus. You could be in the driver's blind spot.
If you drop something near the bus, don't pick it up until you tell the bus driver or he may not see you.
When you get on the bus, take your seat quickly.
While you're riding the bus

When the bus is moving, always stay in your seat.
Let the bus driver concentrate on the road. Just imagine how hard it would be to pay attention to the road with 30 students TALKING all at once!!! Remember, the bus driver's job is to get you to and from school safely.
Getting off the bus

When you leave the bus, use the handrail. It'll help you avoid an injury if you stumble.
Make sure there's nothing sticking out on you (your clothes, the hood of your coat, keychains, etc) or your backpack (straps, drawstrings, or anything else) that could get caught in the handrail on the bus or the bus door. What if the bus driver took off while you're still trying to get off the bus?
When getting off the bus make sure you walk (not run) three more steps away from the door. This is the best place to be around a bus. Stay away from the bus wheels and watch out for moving cars!
If you have to cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the sidewalk (or along the side of the road) to a point that's at least 5 GIANT STEPS ahead of the bus before you cross. It's never safe to walk close to the front of the bus. The bus driver may be sitting up too high to see you. Be sure that the bus driver can see you, and you can see the bus driver.

Smoke Detectors

Install smoke detectors. A working smoke detector can alert you if there is a fire in your home. This provides early warning in time to escape a fire. Smoke detectors should be on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area and in each bedroom. Test your detectors monthly and change the battery twice a year. Any smoke detector that is more than 10 years old should be replaced.

Do you know what to do if there is a fire in your home?

Get out of your house FAST, and yell FIRE!
Crawl on the floor if you see smoke as smoke rises.

It's important to get out FAST
NEVER hide or take time to gather up your belongings.
Yell FIRE so everyone in the house will know to get out.
If your clothes should catch on fire, Stop, Drop, & Roll on the ground is the best way to put out a clothing fire.

Before opening any door in a fire, feel it first. If it is hot, there may be fire on the other side. Try to get out another way.
Stay low to the floor when escaping a fire.

Do you know some safety rules for walking or playing outside?

Stay far away from parked cars.
Stay far away from the street.

ALWAYS Wear bright colors.

Before you buy a bicycle helmet, make sure it fits!
Wear it low on your forehead - 2 finger widths above your eyebrows.
Sit it evenly between your ears and flat on your head.
Tighten the chin strap and adjust the pads inside so it feels snug and secure and doesn't move up and down or from side to side.

Dangers of Water

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age five. Child drownings can happen in a matter of seconds and often there is no splashing to warn of trouble. Curiosity, rapidly changing skills, and an inability to understand danger place young children at risk.

Do you know the safety rules for swimming?

NEVER go near water without an adult.
Learn how to swim.

Prevent Dog Bites

NEVER approach a dog that you don't know. Report stray dogs or dogs displaying unusual behavior.
Remain motionless when approached by an unfamiliar dog -- never run or scream.
Do not disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies.
If it appears that a dog is going to attack you, throw an article of clothing or something else at the dog that the dog can bite instead of biting you.
If a dog leaps at you, cover your head and neck. It is very important that you try to keep the dog away from your head and neck.
If knocked down by a dog, lie still and remain in a ball.
Do not play aggressive games with your dog; for example, wrestling.
Never try to separate fighting dogs.
If bitten by a dog, immediately report the bite.

Smoking

Smoking is the number 1 preventable cause of death in the United States.

Around 8 ½ million people in the U.S. have at least one serious illness caused by smoking.

Each year, smoking kills more people than AIDS, alcohol, drug abuse, car accidents, homicides, and suicides.combined.

Smoking

Smoking is responsible for 87 percent of deaths from lung cancer, 21 percent of deaths from heart disease, 18 percent of deaths from stroke, and 80 to 90 percent of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema and chronic bronchitis).

Smokers will usually die 10-12 years younger than non-smokers.

Every eight seconds someone dies from tobacco use...that's about as long as it takes to read this sentence.

The top mortality rates, by cause, in the United States consist of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, lung cancer and chronic pulmonary disease, all proven to be associated with smoking.
